Software Updates and Patching: Why "Remind Me Later" Is a Security Risk
The single most exploited weakness in home computing is not a clever new hacking technique. It is the "Remind me later" button. Security researchers consistently find that the overwhelming majority of successful attacks use vulnerabilities that were patched months or years earlier — flaws with a fix already sitting on the vendor's server, waiting for someone to click install.
Updating is boring, it interrupts your work, and occasionally it breaks something. Here is what is actually happening when you postpone one, how the risk window works, and how to set things up so updates stop being a decision you have to make.
What a Security Update Actually Contains
Software ships with bugs. Some of those bugs let an attacker do something the developer never intended — read memory they should not see, run code from a file that was supposed to be just data, escalate from a limited account to full administrator. When a researcher finds one, it is assigned a CVE identifier and reported to the vendor. The vendor writes a fix and pushes it out as an update.
Crucially, the update itself tells attackers exactly where the flaw was. Within hours of a patch release, security teams and criminals alike compare the old and new code to work out what changed. Working exploits for high-value bugs often appear within days.
The Risk Window
This creates a clear timeline:
- Before the patch: the flaw is a zero-day. Only sophisticated attackers who discovered it independently can use it. Risk to ordinary users is low.
- Patch day: the fix ships and the flaw becomes public knowledge.
- Days one to seven: proof-of-concept exploit code circulates. Automated scanning for unpatched systems begins.
- Week two onwards: the exploit is folded into off-the-shelf criminal toolkits. Attacking unpatched devices now requires no skill at all.
Every day you postpone moves you deeper into the window where the attack is easy and automated. "I'll do it next month" means spending a month as the easiest target on the internet.
Which Updates Matter Most
Not everything deserves the same urgency. Prioritise in this order:
- Browser. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari process untrusted content from every site you visit. Browser updates, especially ones described as fixing an actively exploited flaw, should be applied the same day. Restart the browser — an update that has downloaded but not restarted is not applied.
- Operating system. Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android security patches. Apple's Rapid Security Responses and Android's monthly security patch level exist specifically for urgent fixes.
- Router firmware. Routers sit directly on the internet and are rarely updated. Compromised routers are used to redirect your DNS and intercept traffic. Check yours quarterly.
- Password manager and security tools. The software holding your credentials must be current.
- Everything else: office suites, PDF readers, media players, IoT devices.
Warning Signs You Are Behind
- Your phone shows an Android security patch level older than three months (Settings, About phone, Android version).
- Your device model no longer receives updates at all. Phones typically get three to seven years of support depending on manufacturer; after that, the device is permanently vulnerable.
- You are running an operating system past its end-of-support date. No patches are issued at all, regardless of how severe the flaw.
- Your router's firmware page shows a version released several years ago.
- You keep dismissing a browser restart prompt that has been there for days.
How to Make Updates Automatic
Windows
Settings, Windows Update. Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available, and set active hours so restarts happen overnight rather than mid-task. Check "Optional updates" occasionally for driver and firmware fixes.
macOS
System Settings, General, Software Update, click the info icon next to Automatic Updates and enable every option, especially Install Security Responses and system files.
iPhone and iPad
Settings, General, Software Update, Automatic Updates. Enable both download and install, and turn on Security Responses & System Files.
Android
Settings, System, Software update for the OS. Separately open the Play Store, tap your profile, Settings, Network preferences, Auto-update apps, and choose over any network or Wi-Fi only.
Router
Log into the admin page, find Firmware or System Update, and enable automatic updates if the model supports it. If it does not, put a quarterly reminder in your calendar. If the manufacturer has stopped releasing firmware for your model, replace it — an unsupported router is a permanent hole in your network.
The Legitimate Objections, Answered
"Updates break things." Occasionally true, mostly for major version upgrades rather than security patches. The practical compromise: enable automatic security patches, and delay feature upgrades by a week or two while you watch for reports.
"Updates slow down my old device." This is largely a myth for security patches, which are small. Feature updates can add load on older hardware. Security patches are not the thing making your phone slow.
"I'll be interrupted at a bad moment." Set active hours and a restart schedule. Every platform now supports installing overnight.
"I don't have anything worth stealing." Automated attacks do not evaluate you. They want your device for its processing power, its network position, its stored credentials, and its access to your email — which is the recovery route to every other account you own.
If You Suspect You Were Already Compromised
- Update everything immediately, starting with the operating system and browser.
- Run a full scan with a reputable antivirus tool, plus a second-opinion scanner such as Malwarebytes.
- Change passwords from a different, known-clean device — starting with your email account.
- Check for unfamiliar browser extensions, scheduled tasks, and admin accounts.
- Review the login history of your main accounts and sign out all other sessions.
- If the device is unsupported and cannot be patched, back up your data and reinstall the system, or retire the hardware.
The Bottom Line
Attackers are not usually breaking new ground. They are running automated scans for machines that have not applied a fix everyone else applied months ago. Turning on automatic updates removes you from that population almost entirely, and it costs you nothing but a restart at 3am. Enable automatic updates on your operating system, your browser, and your phone today, set a quarterly reminder for your router, and stop treating "Remind me later" as a neutral choice — it is a decision to stay vulnerable.
